Chains and Binders

A chain is a serial assembly of connected pieces, called links, typically made of metal, with an overall character similar to that of a rope in that it is flexible and curved in compression but linear, rigid, and load-bearing in tension. Used for various purposes – restraint, transport, support, etc.

Transport chain and load binders are a staple when it comes to tying down equipment and other heavy cargo. They have the strength needed to securely hold your load in place. (Photo of chain) Typically, grade 70 is the standard for tie down chain. Other chain grades 80, 100 and 120can also be used, but aren't as popular. Deciding which chain grade and size you need depends on several factors, but the working load limit is the deciding one – the combined WLL of the chains you use must exceed at least 50% of the total weight of your cargo.

There are two basic styles of chain binders – lever binders and ratchet binders.

Ratchet Load Binders

These use a ratcheting mechanism to add tension to your chain and secure the load. It features a ratchet handle and two tension hooks, one on each end of the handle.

Level Binders

These use way fewer moving parts than a ratchet binder. They come equipped with only a lever and tension hooks on either side. This way, the lever can add more force when applied to your tie-down system.
